On Saturday, December 19, the Committee for the Protection of Democracy (KOD) will protest in Warsaw, Poland and 20 other Polish cities. KOD members and supporters will demonstrate also in front of the Polish embassies and consulates in Tokyo, Brussels, Berlin, London, New York City, Toronto and in several other countries.

– “We want to demonstrate our determination in protecting our Constitution, democracy and law in Poland” – says Mateusz Kijowski, the founder of the grassroots social movement, KOD. KOD was founded a month ago as a Facebook group. It has already attracted more then forty five thousand people, estabished chapters in the real world and registered as an association.

The demonstration begins at noon in front of the parliament building. Many legendary leaders of the anti-communist opposition, celebrities and average citizens have announced their intention to participate in the demonstration.

IMG_4735„We want to demonstrate our support for the Judges of the Court and their judiciary independence” – says Kijowski. „Recent political events show that democracy in Poland is threatened. Actions of the government show its disregard for the law and democratic customs. The parliamentary majority abuses power, blocks actions of the opposition in the parliament and demonstrates lack of respect for the rules of law and mechanisms of democracy. The Polish president is breaching the Constitution and does not respect the verdicts of the Constitutional Court. The foundation of a democratic state that is based on the separation of judiciary, executive and legislative powers is being violated. This forces us to come to the streets.” – says Mateusz Kijowski.

This is the third protest of the Committee for the Protection of Democracy on the streets of Poland. The first one took place on December 3, in front of the Constitutional Court in Warsaw. During an all-day picket, about 2000 KOD backers and members demonstrated their support for the Constitutional Court and its independence. The second protest, on December 12, gathered 50 thousand people in Warsaw and several hundreds in other cities and abroad.

KOD has emerged as a spontaneous social movement; it has no relationship with any political party and it does not oppose any. Its goal is to defend democracy, civic liberties and object to any attempts to breach the Constitution. KOD chose only a peaceful, non-violent and non-aggressive means of protests, acting with respect for the law and in the limits of the law.

In the manifesto available on its website, KOD invites everyone who cherishes democratic values, regardless of political attitudes and religious beliefs.
